Preview: Stormers v Highlanders
VENUE & TIME: Newlands, Cape Town, Saturday March 6, 17.05 local (02.05 Sunday AEDT).

HEAD TO HEAD: Played 14 – Western Province/Stormers 4, Highlanders 9, drawn 1.

LAST TIME: April 24, 2009 (Dunedin) – Highlanders 11-18 Stormers.

LAST TIME AT VENUE: April 26, 2008 – Stormers 26-16 Highlanders.

MATCH ODDS: Luxbet (Thursday): Stormers $1.37, Highlanders $3.10.

WALKING WOUNDED: The Stormers had good news on the availability front this week, with Schalk Burger back from his hamstring problems and Wickus Blaauw over his shoulder niggle. On top of that Dewaldt Duvenhage has been promoted to start at scrum-half, a move many in the Cape feel a couple of weeks overdue. Anton Van Zyl also returns to the run-on XV with all four displaced from last week dropping to the bench. The Highlanders, not surprisingly, have named an unchanged lineup.

FORM:

PAST FIVE Stormers:
Round 1: Beat Lions 26-13
Round 2: Beat Waratahs 27-6
Round 3: Lost to Brumbies 17-19

PAST FIVE Highlanders:
Round 1: Lost to Crusaders 17-32
Round 2: Lost to Blues 15-19
Round 3: Beat Cheetahs 31-24

The Stormers would rather forget the closing minutes of last week’s match, as they gave up a try to the Brumbies before scoring one themselves only for the match-tying conversion to drift wide of the posts. Given their form of the previous two weeks, this would be seen in the Cape as three points lost unnecessarily. The Highlanders, on the other hand, would have much kinder memories of the closing stages of their first win for the year, which came something against most predictions. While the Highlanders had been competitive in both previous matches, the travel and a confident Cheetahs side were combined factors expected to do the Highlanders in. Both matches probably cost the betting agencies a few bob, while Stormers coach Allister Coetzee, who lamented in the media this week about the number of tries his charges bombed, obviously got less satisfaction from the weekend than Highlanders boss Glenn Moore.

WHO'S HOT: The Stormers had been looking good until slipping against the Brumbies last week but they won’t be easy-beats in this one. The return of Duvenhage to halfback should give the line more spark and, if that happens, watch out for the ever-dangerous Bryan Habana anywhere there is a try on offer. Andries Bekker is a dominant player these days and plenty of pressure will go on the Highlanders to nullify the big man’s power, while Burger is also a known threat. The Highlanders have concentrated on their set pieces at training this week, where the front row will be put to the test at scrum time and Josh Bekhuis and Tom Donnelly will really need to be on the case in the lineouts. Michale Hobbs continues to present a running and try-scoring threat from first-five and Israel Dagg – who did a handy job off the kicking tee last week – is ever-keen to have a go from the back.

WE THINK: This is one of those games that could go either way – the Highlanders have a good record over the Stormers – but we suspect the visitors will need a lot to go right to take four points. We can’t see the Stormers blowing it twice running and will pick the home side by 10 points or so, although a bonus point might not be too easy to obtain.

TEAMS:

Stormers: 1 – Wicus Blaauw, 2 – Tiaan Liebenberg, 3 – Brok Harris, 4 – Anton Van Zyl, 5 – Andries Bekker, 6 – Schalk Burger, 7 – Francois Louw, 8 – Duane Vermeulen, 9 – Dewaldt Duvenhage, 10 – Peter Grant, 11 – Bryan Habana, 12 – Juan de Jongh, 13 – Jaque Fourie, 14 – Gio Aplon, 15 – Joe Pietersen.

80:00 Full time and the Stormers have won 33-nil in a very dominant display over the luckless Highlanders who lost Cowan midway through the 2nd half.

79:00 CONVERSION STORMERS - Grant converts this time, but its a kick that means virtually nothing as the game comes to a close, Stormers lead 33-nil.

78:00 TRY STORMERS - Habana caps off a great victory for the Stormers with a great individual try, soccering the ball through several times before picking it up and diving over the line to score.

77:00 The Highlanders have a scrum just over halfway, and right off the back of the scrum Thomson is pinged for accidental offside as he ran the wrong line in front of another Highlander.

74:00 The Highlanders have a rare opportunity to score some points with a lineout just 2m from the line after a deliberate knock on by Louw gifts them a penalty.

70:00 Grant lines up the conversion from a wide angle but he can't land the conversion for the Stormers either.

69:00 TRY STORMERS - Good hard driving by the Stormers and the big men pave the way for Louw who goes over to score.

68:00 The Stormers are looking for more points but can't quite get there as a player is held up over the line. Good defence though from the Highlanders.

65:00 The Stormers are playing good smart rugby, shown here after a great kick for territory by Pietersen. Lineout Highlanders inside their own 22m.

62:00 Pietersen has missed a relatively easy conversion kick - maybe he picked up a bit of breeze or something because he has been kicking so well up to this point.

61:00 TRY STORMERS - The pressure ended up too much for the Highlanders and Burger carries defenders over the line to score after a good driving play by the Stormers.

59:00 The Stormers have a lineout 40m out from the line, and they are throwing everything at the Highlanders now.

54:00 The Highlanders are out of jail, with a turn over 5m out from their own line.

52:00 The Stormers have held off against a long period of Highlanders attack, and they are on attack inside Highlanders territory now.

50:00 Cowan reaches out to score, but he has lost the ball forward. In the process he has broken his hand or dislocated a finger - not a pretty sight, he leaves the field and wont be back.

48:00 The Stormers are penalised for not releasing, Bekker the culprit this time. Cowan again decides that the easy 3-pts are not enough, the Highlanders are looking for a try!

46:00 Cowan goes straight through the defence and the Highlanders are looking good here as play is brought down on the 22m line.

43:00 The Stormers look like they are going to carry their form from the 1st half into this 2nd half, and they are already threatening... but on this attack they have thrown the ball forward.

41:00 The Highlanders kick off to get the 2nd half underway.

40:00 Half-time and the Stormers lead 16-nil and are looking comfortable, although the Highlanders can still come back in the 2nd half.

38:00 Danger for the Highlanders as the Stormers win a lineout 22m short of the tryline. More points before half-time would make it very hard for the Highlanders.

35:00 The Stormers should have gone in again! The final pass to Pietersen is dropped behind him just short of the line, the try-saving tackle was made by Thomson.

32:00 PENALTY STORMERS - Pietersen extends the lead out to 16-nil from right in front after the Highlanders were penalised for the tackler not rolling away.

28:00 The Highlanders get out of jail after a kick from Hobbs is charged down, the scrambling defence did well in this instance.

26:00 Off the feet at the breakdown is the call against the Stormers and the ref has saved the Highlander who were under the pump just 10m out from their line.

24:00 Liebenberg runs a beautiful line and splits the defence, but the inside pass intended for Burger is snatched up by Mackintosh to save a certain try!

22:00 Hobbs lines up a drop goal, but it is waved away to the right. Smart play by the Highlanders but the execution wasn't good enough.

19:00 Vainikolo is hit high as he was charging for the line. The penalty is awarded to the Highlanders who are going for the try rather than taking the easy 3-pts.

17:00 The Highlanders are awarded a penalty just short of halfway, and should get into a great position to mount an attack and add some points.

14:00 CONVERSION STORMERS - Pietersen is in good form with the boot today, nailing a difficult conversion from out wide.

13:00 TRY STORMERS - Fourie finishes and outstanding passage of play from the Stormers, too much pressure on the Highlanders defence and in the end Fourie dives over out wide.

11:00 PENALTY STORMERS - Pietersen kicks the Stormers further ahead with another penalty from a similar position. Discipline becoming a problem for the Highlanders.

08:00 PENALTY STORMERS - The Stormers take the early lead through the boot of Pietersen, after Soakai was penalised for not rolling away. The penalty was right in front.

05:00 The Highlanders are on attack inside the Stormers half and they are looking dangerous, but the defence hasn't cracked yet!

03:00 A dangerous tackle gives the Highlanders a chance for an early lead, but Dagg's radar is slightly off as the penalty kick is waved away.

01:00 The Stormers kick off to begin the game with a deep kick down field.

Stormers romp home
Wing Bryan Habana's try at the death helped the Stormers secure an unlikely 33-0 bonus-point victory over the Highlanders in a mostly one-sided encounter in Cape Town.

The home side, which had won two out of its three games in the Super 14 thus far, looked like it was going to be denied the crucial extra point after countless errors at crucial times during the game at Newlands.

But with seconds remaining, the South Africa winger charged down first five-eighths Michael Hobbs' kick on the halfway line and charged 50 metres to score.

His effort added to earlier scores from hooker Deon Fourie, flanker Schalk Burger and replacement forward Pieter Louw as the Stormers continued their good start to the campaign.

After dominating the early exchanges, the visitors had an early point-scoring opportunity when lock Andries Bekker was penalised for dangerously tackling hooker Jason Rutledge, but fullback Israel Dagg pulled his penalty to the right.

It proved to be their only real chance to score in the first half as the home side then began to dominate.

Fullback Joe Pietersen put the first points on the board after nine minutes when flanker Alando Soakai failed to roll away from the ruck and doubled the advantage four minutes later by capitalising on prop Clint Newland being caught offside.

The first try arrived on the 15-minute mark when the ball was quickly spread wide to replacement wing Sireli Naqelevuki, who was held up just short, but Fourie picked up and dived over in the corner.

Pietersen added an excellent conversion, before another penalty on the half-hour - awarded when flanker Adam Thomson failed to release in the tackle - helped Alastair Coetzee's team to a 16-0 half-time lead.

After the restart, the host came out desperately searching for the three more tries which would hand it a bonus point and for a while it looked like it was not going to be its evening.

Halfback Jimmy Cowan looked like scoring after his quick thinking at the base of the ruck saw him dive over - but the referee went upstairs and the television official rightly spotted a knock on.

The New Zealand halfback soon had to go off after picking up a knock and it proved a telling blow for his team, which finally conceded the second try 21 minutes into the second half.

It came after several phases of rucking and Burger applied the finishing touches by driving over.

Pietersen missed the conversion this time, but the Stormers did not have long to wait for their next points - another passage of good work from the forwards saw them win the line-out and allow time for Louw to push his way over.

Another miss by the kicking fullback followed, but with time running out Springbok star Habana had the final say to send the 36,000 crowd into a frenzy.
